Sapphire - September's Birthstone

The birthstone for September is the stunning blue gem - sapphire. This stone was part of the original list of Hebrew birthstones, and has continued to be a favorite across cultures and centuries.

Greek mythology holds that the first ring ever worn was made of sapphire, that it was believed to belong to Prometheus who, as part of his punishment for discovering fire, was made to wear the jewel as a reminder of the hottest parts of the flames he was not ever to coax to life again.

Long associated with royalty and romance, sapphires are also said to symbolize fidelity, sincerity, truth, faithfulness, nobility and the soul. For centuries, sapphires have adorned royalty and the robes of the clergy. The elite of ancient Greece and Rome believed that blue sapphires protected their owners from harm and envy. Clerics of the Middle Ages wore sapphires because they symbolized Heaven. Ancient Persians believed the earth actually rested on a giant sapphire, which made the sky blue.

What’s for certain is that this stone has a fascinating heritage going back thousands of years due to its beguiling colour and clarity. It is often referred to as the gem of autumn due to its similarity to the blue of the autumn sky.
